Have you heard the news? Virtual YouTubers have officially become ambassadors! Yes, you read that right – these animated characters are now representing Tokyo to promote tourism. Move over, human celebrities – it's time for some virtual star power.
The Tokyo government recently appointed a batch of tourism ambassadors, and among them were three VTubers from the talent agency Hololive: Gawr Gura, Mori Calliope, and Miko Sakura. You might be wondering, how did these cartoon characters land such a prestigious role? Well, apparently, their social media followings can number in the millions. That's right, folks – virtual popularity is real popularity.
And it's not just Tokyo that's jumping on the VTuber bandwagon. Other prefectural tourism boards are also targeting these animated personalities for promotional purposes. Saitama VTuber Tsukushi Kasukabe became the tourism ambassador for her prefecture last year. But not all partnerships go smoothly – two years ago, the Chiba Prefecture Police Department faced criticism for teaming up with VTuber Linca Tojou for a bicycle safety campaign. Apparently, Tojou's depiction as a sexualized minor didn't sit well with feminist groups. Oops.
But let's get back to the good news – the fact that virtual avatars are being recognized as legitimate influencers is a sign of just how big the industry has become in Japan. In fact, a report by MarketResearch.com predicted that the virtual YouTubing industry will continue to grow in the coming years, with an increase in revenue from abroad. And with recent controversies surrounding VTubers on Twitch, it's clear that these animated characters are being treated like any other online personality.
So, what does this mean for us mere mortals? Well, for one, we might have to start brushing up on our virtual communication skills. Who knows, maybe in the future, job interviews will be conducted by virtual avatars. Or maybe we'll start seeing more animated politicians – I mean, why not? If virtual sharks and anime girls can be ambassadors, who's to say a virtual senator or mayor is out of the question?
In any case, we can only hope that the tourism appointments for Gawr Gura, Mori Calliope, and Miko Sakura go off without a hitch. After all, we wouldn't want our virtual ambassadors to get caught up in any controversies. But one thing's for sure – the future of virtual YouTubing looks bright, and we can't wait to see what these animated characters will do next.
